Founded in 1922, Den Danske Klub in Montreal is the oldest Danish Association in Canada. Its purpose, as per its by-laws is, 'to encourage mutual solidarity among Danes in Montreal and to maintain the connection with the native country'.
Initially, Club members met in the evening. Today, the Club meets for a Danish Luncheon (with 'Smørrebrod' et al) once a month, on the second Wednesday, at the Officers' Mess of the Royal Montreal Regiment.
Membership in the Club is open to persons of Danish origin or background and/or with an interest in Denmark and Danish affairs. Meetings and a quarterly newsletter are in English, but a few Danish Evenings ('Danske Aftener') in spring and fall are in Danish only - and serve also as an opportunity for persons wishing to practice their spoken Danish.
During the summer, the Club sponsors four 'Soccer Saturdays', where teams of Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish players compete for the 'Molson Cup', followed by a Danish picnic lunch. And in the fall, an annual 'Mortens Aften' (St. Martin's Eve) Dinner Dance takes place.
The Club has a board of five members, elected at the Annual General Meeting in November, and a membership of between 105 and 120 persons.
