Montreal 1610

Located in the province of Québec on the largest of two islands in the St. Lawrence river, it is named after the mountain (hill) "Mount Royal" which is part of the Monteregian escarpment. i.e. "Montréal". Mount Royal is often falsely referred to as an extinct volcano.

Home to the Algonquin, Huron, and Iroquois tribes, it was here that in 1534 Jacques Cartier first set foot in what was then the Iroquois village of Hochelaga.

In 1604 the local Iroquois successfully defended their land when Samuel de Champlain attempted to set up a fur trading post.

However a mission named Ville Marie was established in 1642 and became the center for the trade and French expansion into New France.

Incorporated as a city in 1832, it's growth was spurred by the opening of the Lachine Canal and Montréal was the capital of the United Province of Canada from 1844 to 1849
